The Whidbey Island Writer’s Refuge is the brainchild of Petra Martin, an easily distracted writer who finds it challenging to work if there is music playing in the background. Add to that two home-based businesses and the frequent and unpredictable interruptions of her beloved 12-year-old son, and you’ll understand how she came to create a place where writers can get away to focus completely on their work.
In 2008, Petra opened the doors of the Foxglove Cabin. Early in 2011, Petra invited Linda Walsh to add the Sandpiper Suite, which offered an inspirational spot on the beach, as well as a place that welcomes pets. Later that year, Petra invited Karen and Steve Jordan to add the Ravensea Loft, the largest accommodation, which is suitable for longer stays, and welcomes small dogs.
Petra runs the Writer’s Refuge business and website, fields questions and books stays for all accommodations, and hosts at the Foxglove Cabin. Linda and Karen and Steve host their accommodations, making the writers who stay there feel right at home.
